Know your water main shut-off
Usually near the front boundary at the water meter. Turn it clockwise to shut off. Practice this NOW — you won't want to figure it out during a burst pipe.

Know your gas shut-off
Quarter-turn lever near the gas meter. When the lever is perpendicular to the pipe, gas is off. If you smell gas: don't touch switches, open windows, leave, call 1800 427 532.

Know your switchboard
Find the main switch and safety switch (RCD). Label each circuit breaker so you know which controls the kitchen, bathroom, etc. The main switch kills all power.

Save emergency numbers
Fire/Ambulance/Police: 000. Gas emergency: 1800 427 532. SES (storm/flood): 132 500. Your electrician, plumber, and insurance company.

Emergency torch and batteries
Keep a torch in a known location (kitchen drawer, bedside). Check batteries every 6 months. Phone torches die when you most need them.

First aid kit
Basic kit with bandages, antiseptic, burn gel, and pain relief. Check expiry dates annually. Keep in a known, accessible location.

Fire extinguisher and blanket
A dry powder extinguisher near the kitchen (not IN the kitchen — you need to reach it while escaping). A fire blanket for stovetop fires.

Insurance policy details
Know your policy number, insurer, and claims phone number. Keep a copy outside the home (email yourself a photo). Know what's covered and your excess amount.

Document valuables
Photograph every room, appliances, and valuable items. Store photos in the cloud. This makes insurance claims dramatically faster and more successful.

Know your neighbours
Exchange phone numbers with at least one neighbour. They can alert you to problems when you're away and help in an emergency.
